Linking the Sky and Land in Water Colour Painting
Sep 23rd
The sky is the most important factor when conveying a mood in a landscape painting. The sky should compliment and enhance your landscape composition, rather than being considered purely as a ‘backdrop’. To do this you need to look for the connections between the land and sky. This might be the colour, tone, or corresponding shapes.
Don’t be tempted to paint the sky first and then go on to paint the landscape, you will certainly end up with a disjointed appearance to the final image. Instead, complete the painting as a whole. Bring colours from the sky into the land colours, and hint at colours of the land in the sky.
The clouds are the ‘face’ of the sky. They are like an expression in the painting, creating an overall mood. You should also use them to create balance in your picture. For instance, if you have a large hill on one side of the picture, balance this with a large formation of clouds on the other side. Like this you can create ‘sight lines’ to draw your attention to certain areas in a picture.
Don’t be afraid to use colours expressively in the sky, to enhance it’s character. Use warm colours for a sunny day, cool colours for a cold day and possibly violets and purples in storm cloud.
Although we think of the sky simply as an element of a landscape, and something that a landscape artist may be more interested in, portrait artists may also need to include them as a scene setter for a portrait, creating the mood required to enhance the picture. However, for some portrait artists, it will probably be preferable for the details to be less pronounced, with more of an ‘overall’ effect rather than the specifics.
Remember, pet portraits are for life, not just for Christmas!
Using Colour Expressively
Aug 27th
Whether your subject matter consists mainly of landscapes or even pet portraits, using colour expressively can be an important way of bringing a picture to life. There are various techniques to help you achieve this.
Use your hot colours against cool or subdued colours, these will make the hot colours appear brighter.
Use complementary colours, these enhance each other, intensifying both.
Use colour to suit your mood, or to reflect how the subject makes you feel, rather than what is actually there.
Don’t be timid with your use of colour, and don’t forget white, it’s the brightest colour and can bring the zing into any painting if used with moderation.
Try and keep your colours as pure as possible, a well laid out palette and using a different or cleaned brushes for each colour will help. When mixing your paint, try and use as few individual colours as possible, to achieve the final colour you need.
